Suburban-ish Shopping Center Takes Over Blighted Block

Mid-City Market, a $38 million, seemingly-suburban, shopping plaza on North Carrollton Avenue, is set to open July 31. Anchored by Winn Dixie, the 107,000-square foot plaza broke ground in March 2012. An abundance of issues (budget snafus,design-related concerns, Hurricane Issac) pushed back the original opening date. Mid-City Market's slew of national chains is new territory for keep-it-local-New Orleanians, but perhaps they reasoned this beats the alternative. The area flooded during Hurricane Katrina and this six-acre site was largely blighted for years.

Once towing the line of food desert status, the area is seeing a boom in options. Rouse's, a Louisiana-owned supermarket is directly across the street. Costco and Whole Foods are coming soon. Market developers did recognize their proximity to the Lafitte Greenway, the swath of land that will eventually connect Mid-City to the edge of the Quarter. Terraces, outdoor seating, and bike racks were included in the plans, so its not complete car-ruling suburbia...yet.
