Those against the demolition of the New Orleans' World Trade Center will be rallying outside of City Hall on Tuesday, July 2 at 9 a.m. According to the "Save The WTC NOLA" Facebook page, there will be speakers, signs, opportunity for comments, FREE DONUTS (emphasis theirs) and refreshments. Afterward, Mayor Mitch Landrieu will conduct the first public meeting concerning the WTC's future. Recently named one the city's most endangered sites by the Louisiana Landmarks Committee, things are heating up over future plans for the vacant, city-owned building at the foot of Canal Street.
All of those "Save The WTC" signs popping up around town are not part of a grassroots effort, The Advocate says. They're courtesy of the Gatehouse Corp., whose plans include turning the WTC into a W Hotel with apartments on the top floors.
While James Burch's proposal for a luxury hotel and office spaces is well-known, some details seem to have been left out. Like, a rooftop observation deck with "pirates" recounting New Orleans' history. In case that's not touristy enough for y'all, his plans also include a "Mardi Gras Club," whatever that means.
