The old, vacant Gator's Discount Store on the quickly-changing Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard in Central City is on its way to a new life as the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra performance venue. City Biz reports that construction should start in the next 60 days and last through the year. The project will run to the tune of $8 million or so with Atlanta-based architecture firm Kronberg Wall on the design team and Landis Construction on board. The orchestra folks bought the building for $600,000 last fall and plan to turn the 14,000-square-foot space into a concert space that can seat 610. They'll also offer "music education experiences" and a New Orleans jazz archive.
