Unpaid Fees Leave 1031 Canal St. Development In Limbo

New, 5 comments

Last week we wondered what the heck the status is on the is-it-really-going-to-happen? $70 million luxury development at 1031 Canal Street. Word on the street says the developer, Mohan Kailas, is disputing the $383,028 in building fees and plan reviews for the 17-story project, which includes 240 residences and 15 penthouses with 56,000-square-feet of retail space. WWL reports that city officials plan to meet up with Kailas sometime next week to chat about the unpaid fees. Acknowledging that "this is such a large project," the permit department is requiring only a portion of the payment ($179,212) to keep the 1031 Canal St. review process ball rolling but so far, only $60,331 has been paid. Once again, no return phone calls from Team Kailas.
