Architectural Review Comm. Weighs in on Proposed CBD Hotel

New, 15 comments

Plans for a five-story hotel that could possibly rise on the corner of Julia and Baronne Streets in the CBD are going to need a little tweaking. The proposal for the 150-room hotel, included a rooftop deck, penthouse, and demo action for a covered parking shed and the two-story building at 740 Baronne St. The Architectural Review Committee said while they could recommend "conceptual approval of the proposal's massing," they were not cool with the plans for a "rooftop cabana" or a height variance for the penthouse. According to notes on the city's One Stop App website, the ARC guys suggest that instead of a penthouse, add a fourth floor at the Julia Street building between the condos at 835 Julia St. and the two-story structure. Neighborhood outcry has been minimal but a tipster says neighbors were hoping for a residential-based plan and feel that a hotel will "negatively impact the neighborhood." The next step: revised drawings and the hotel is on the agenda for the next meeting on May 27.
