An old rusted-out, city-owned incinerator in Algiers that has been vacant since it shut down in, um, 1975 will get the wrecking ball treatment at last. The property on the 2300 block of Hendee Street isn't just an eyesore; it has attracted some metal-seeking scavengers and a squatter or two. The mayor's press release on the demo, which boasts of his blight fighting tactics, says it will cost about $300,000 and should begin sometime late this summer. The plan is to return the West Bank site to commerce with the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority and the New Orleans Business Alliance running the redevelopment show.
