Pop-Up Produce Stand to Take Over Vacant Lower 9th Ward Lot

A plan to transform an empty Lower 9th Ward lot at 5029 St. Claude Avenue into a pop-up produce stand was the big winner of the Lots of Progress contest, pulling in $5,634 toward its $8,700 start-up goal, The Times-Pic reports. The competition, a collab with the incubator Propeller and the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority, was on the hunt for ideas that would put vacant lots to good use. Citing the lack of healthy food options in the neighborhood, Rosamar Torres pitched her idea for a stand selling locally grown produce that she will run via the Sankofa Community Development Corporation. The spot, which will also offer classes on topics like urban farming and healthy eating, could be up and running in the next few months.
