Legendary New Orleans musician Allen Toussaint died this week, and amid the outpouring of love from fans is a petition circulating to rechristen Lee Circle as a memorial to the artist.
In June Mayor Mitch Landrieu said he was interested in removing the city's Confederate monuments, including the statue at Lee Circle, which spurred those opposed to the monuments' removal to organize on social media. Later, an anonymous donor came forward, offering to pay to have the monuments removed.
The petition was created by the Facebook group Allen Toussaint Circle, which already has 4,486 likes. Is this something everyone can agree on, or will those wanting to keep the monuments hold strong?
