Fully Renovated Madame X Mansion Hits the Market at $3.6M

Live in the rumored childhood home of the famous Madame X, Virginie Avegno. Fully renovated and restored in 2012 by Waring Architects, this multi-unit compound features three apartments behind its grand main house, which holds four more units, making up a total of 8,500 square feet. A total of five parking spots are available on site, according to its listing. 927 Toulouse St was last sold in 2012 for $1.8M allegedly during an auction that saw fifteen bidders. It returns to the market for double the amount at $3.6M.

The circa 1825 three story townhouse is rumored to be where the infamous Madame X grew up. She was the subject of a controversial portrait painted by John Singer Sargent in 1884 that showed her in a strapless black dress and roiled the Paris Salon where it was received. Her father, the Civil War veteran Philippe Avegno, owned the home in her youth from 1822 to 1861. 927 Toulouse was previously on the market in 2005, asking $3.125M.
