Mid-City, Nix libraries to close for relocation and renovation

Both libraries will be temporarily closed by mid-October

According to Gambit, two New Orleans libraries will be temporarily closed by mid-October.

The Mid-City branch will be relocating to the 1963 Automobile Life Insurance building located on 4140 Canal Street. The library was originally located in the American Can Company building on Orleans Avenue. The new location is set to open by the end of November.

The New Orleans Historic District Landmarks Commission deemed 4140 Canal St. a historic building in 2010.

The new building will be two stories high and have 9,259 square feet of space.

The Mid-City library has been at the American Can Company since 2010. Last year the library was almost evicted from the Company stip.

Additionally, Gambit reports that the Nix Library branch, located on N. Carrolton Avenue, will be closed for renovations until early 2017. The library will undergo painting, plumbing, electrical, and other maintenance work.
