Construction crews are gearing up to create a new 67 unit condominium located on 731 St. Charles Avenue on November 29.
The condominium will build on the existing structure’s design and parking garage. The building will be renovated to include five stories, and will be modeled to face both St. Charles Avenue and Carondelet Street.
There will also be two commercial spaces for sale inside the condominium.
The new units will have one to two bedrooms, access to a private balcony or to a private courtyard, a rooftop entertainment area, a swimming pool and a sun deck.
The units will be between 735 and 1,552 square feet, with prices beginning at $400,000.
The building is walking distance from the St. Charles streetcar line and Lafayette Square.
“We are thrilled to take a building on historic St. Charles Avenue that has been an eyesore for decades and breathe new life into it, making it a premier place to live in Downtown New Orleans,” said Steve Montagnet, the principal of 731 St. Charles Ave, LLC, in a prepared statement.
Construction for the new condominium is expected to be completed in Spring of 2018.
The 731 St. Charles Avenue building was originally the Washington Artillery, which served as an armory, and as a carnival venue for Mardi Gras Balls in the late 19th century.
By 1965, the site was converted into an office building. In 2015, the building was bought by the Montagnet family.
The building is designed by Rozas Ward Architects, a New Orleans based architecture firm. The building is contracted by McDonnell Construction services.
