The area beneath the Pontchartrain Expressway, a popular site for homeless encampments, is going to be fenced in to make way for privately managed parking lots.
The $332,000 project will be paid for with revenues from the Union Passenger Terminal and will be completed by mid-April. Four lots running along Calliope Street from St. Charles Avenue to Loyola Avenue will be fenced.
The CEO of the New Orleans Building Corporation, which will erect the fences, says the decision came from needing to meet the high demand of parking in the CBD.
