A motion to demolish a building at 4712 Magazine St., damaged in a fire earlier this year, passed at City Council last week. Neighbors and City Council members plan to keep an eye on the development, in hopes of keeping any "big box" developments from moving in.
Owners of the property, which caught fire in January, said at the meeting that they plan to rebuild the property with residential units upstairs and commercial space on the ground floor. Councilwoman Stacy Head, however, wants assurance that the building remains a "mom-and-pop" development, and that no big box retailers move in.
Neighbors support the demolition, but said they hope the new development is not "so much larger or more invasive" than it is now.
