Second line honoring Fats Domino: Route and street closures

The route is 1.4 miles

In honor of the late Fats Domino, local trumpeter James Andrew has organized a second line to celebrate the life of the famed New Orleans jazz artist.

Starting at Vaughn’s Lounge on Dauphine Street, organizers plan for the second line to start at 5 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

The Mayor’s Office expects the parade to cause heavy traffic in parts of the Bywater and Lower 9th Ward.

The Route

The celebratory procession will start at Vaughn’s Lounge, which is located at 4229 Dauphine Street. Progressing down Dauphine Street toward the Industrial Canal, the second line will turn left on Poland Avenue. Continuing on Poland, it will make a right on St. Claude Avenue, crossing the Industrial Canal. The second line will keep St. Claude Avenue until it makes a left on Caffin Avenue, ending at Fats Domino’s home, which is located at 1208 Caffin Avenue.

The second line will maintain the same route, returning to Vaughn’s lounge.

Traffic

St. Claude Avenue between Lesseps Street and Caffin Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic. Non-related vehicular and pedestrian traffic that need to cross over the Industrial Canal will be directed to Claiborne Avenue.

Parking

Regular parking enforcement will be in effect during the second line. There are no special parking restrictions along the route. Though, parking on the neutral ground is prohibited.
