On Saturday, May 20, Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard Merchant & Business Association will host its 2nd Annual Jane Jacob Walk on Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard. The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place between 9:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. Attendees will initially meet at the New Orleans Jazz Market located at 1436 Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard.
The Jane Jacobs Walk, coordinated by the Center for the Living City, is a series of neighborhood walks that promotes history and culture of neighborhoods around the world. In 2016, the Center oversaw 30 International neighborhood walks. Jane Jacob served as an advocate of and a pioneer in community-based city planning in the mid-20th century.
Guides at Saturday’s walking tour will discuss the transformation of the corridor, and the revitalization of the neighborhood post-Katrina between Philip and Erato streets. Though, the walking tour will also be a great time to check out the corridor’s newly paved street, green spaces, and walkways.
On Thursday, May 18, The Oretha Castle Hayley Boulevard Merchant & Business Association will host a free screening “Citizen Jane: Battle for the City,” a documentary on Jane Jacobs, followed by a panel discussion, at the Ashe’ Powerhouse Theater, located at 1721 Barrone Street. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
