On Wednesday, May 9, contractors will break ground on the New NOPD Second District police station, which will be located on 3401 Broadway Street. The new building will cost $6.3 million, and have 17,000 square feet of useable space. The construction will also include a 19,000 square foot natatorium, located on the same lot.
The second police district covers the southwestern park of New Orleans, which include the Audubon, Freret, Uptown, Holly Grove and Gert Town neighborhoods. A complete map of the Second District can be found on the NOPD’s official website.
Currently, the NOPD second district police force is located at 4317 Magazine Street, in the Uptown Neighborhood. According to WDSU, the city chose to move the police department to a more central location to better serve the second district. The decision to move the station to Gert Town was first announced by Mayor Mitch Landrieu in 2013.
The Office of the Mayor is expected new, in-depth details on the new Second District police department tomorrow at the groundbreaking.
