New Orleans rent comparison: Bywater, Irish Channel, and Uptown Shotgun apartments

From ranging from budget-friendly to luxury

Welcome to Curbed Comparisons, a semi-regular column that explores what one can rent for a set dollar amount in various New Orleans neighborhoods. Is one man's studio another man's townhouse? Let's find out! Today, we're looking at shotgun apartments renting between $990 and $1,950.

↑ By far the least expensive listing, but certainly not the most attractive, this Uptown shotgun rents for $990/month. While there is no official measurement on the square footage, but we do know it has one bedroom and one bathroom. The home sits only a few blocks away from Freret Street. Highlights include hardwood flooring, on-site washer and dryer, and a private backyard at the rear of the home.

↑ For $1,200/month you can rent this colorful shotgun home in the Bywater. At 800 square feet, this home has two bedrooms, two bathrooms. While more expensive than its uptown counterpart, the home has a subpar kitchen and seems to be dimly lit. However, the owner did choose to spice things up with the shotgun’s orange exterior, and multicolored interior. Highlights include a washer and dryer hookup, clawfoot tub , and a shared giant backyard. Dogs and cats are welcome in this unit, too.

↑ If you rather live a bit closer to the Marigny, check out this Bywater shotgun for $1,700/month. At 1,100 square feet, this home’s two bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms, and, by far, one of the largest apartments on the list. Renovated in March of 2016, this home has soaring 12-foot ceilings, original hardwood flooring, a front porch, and back patio. There is no off-street parking of any mention of a pet policy.

↑ If you rather stay away from the Bywater, you can rent this Irish Channel shotgun for $1,950/month. The second largest on this list at two bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms, and 1,074 square feet, this home has one of the best interiors. Highlights include its beautiful hardwood flooring, exposed brick fireplaces, stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, and a sizable back and side yard. The rental allows both dogs and cats. However, there isn’t any off-street parking.
