5 open houses in New Orleans to check out this weekend

From a new construction in St. Roch to a historic Bywater double

Welcome to the weekly Open House Tour, because who doesn’t love a little real estate gawking? This time around, we’re looking at what’s on the market and open for tours in St. Roch, Uptown, Algiers, and more.

This circa-1898 shotgun double in Bywater has been converted into a single with an expansive 2,849-square-foot floor plan. Highlights of the renovated home include soapstone counters in the kitchen and an en suite bathroom with Carrera marble counters, double sinks, a clawfoot tub, and a frameless shower. The asking price is $925,000.

When: 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, September 23

This mid-century split-level home in Algiers was lovingly restored by its former owners. “My partner and I bought it in January and worked nonstop to restore and update it,” said co-owner Jon Walczak. “We did a ton of work on it and 90 percent ourselves.” The duo preserved the vintage light fixtures and restored the original hardwood floors, bringing this three-bedroom, one-bathroom cutie back to its 1957 glory. The asking price is $219,000.

When: Noon to 2. p.m. Saturday, September 22

A spiral staircase connects this Uptown duplex’s 1,500-square-foot units, each with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and new floors throughout. The interior and exterior are also freshly painted. Live on one floor, rent the other to a student (the home is located on Willow Street, near Tulane and Loyola universities), and pay down the $499,000 mortgage lickety-split.

When: Noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, September 23

There’s something sweet and romantic about a sunny condo tucked under the eaves of a 19th-century St. Charles Avenue house. At 1,494 square feet, this one has two bedrooms, one bathroom, and an open living area. Condo fees are $524/month, and the asking price is $385,000.

When: Noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, September 23

Last, this new construction in St. Roch brings the drama with sharply vaulted ceilings and exposed beams. Luxurious touches, including a marble-trimmed kitchen and bathroom, elevate the home’s modest, 1,282-square-foot floor plan, which includes three bedrooms and two bathrooms. $269,000 gets you in.
