A new hostel at 1028 Canal Street joins Hostelling International USA’s (HI USA) network of more than 3,900 hostels across 77 countries.
Featuring 122 beds and 24 private rooms, HI New Orleans takes over five floors in a circa-1896 building once occupied by the Pickwick Social Club. It sits near the intersection of Rampart and Canal streets, by the Rampart streetcar line and catty-corner to the Saenger Theatre.
The project is almost complete. The all-ages hostel features a kitchen, cafe, and meeting room. Rates start at $23/night for a bunk in a four- to eight-person dorm. There are all-male, all-female, and mixed-gender rooms, and each has its own individual bathroom. Twenty-four private guest rooms start at around $119/night. Free wi-fi, free breakfast, and bike storage are among the amenities.
A nonprofit organization, HI USA will offer need-based $2,000 travel scholarships to New Orleanians between ages 18 and 30. The company is hiring for kitchen, guest services, and housekeeping positions.
