Although the Lafitte Greenway has become a vital, scenic corridor for pedestrians and cyclists, it’s incomplete in its current state. The 2.6-mile former railway connects the French Quarter, Treme, Bayou St. John, and Mid-City neighborhoods—but it was originally planned to span 3.1 miles and extend all the way to Lakeview.
That plan was derailed (ha) by “budget limitations and ... continuing complexities related to an active rail spur and property ownership,” according to a press release from Friends of Lafitte Greenway.
To that end, Friends of Lafitte Greenway is hosting “Complete the Greenway” at Second Line Brewing (433. N. Bernadotte St.) from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 26. At the all-ages event, community members can share their thoughts and test out a “pop-up demonstration” of the proposed extension.
Once complete, the greenway would end at the RTA’s Cemeteries Transit Center near the intersection of Canal Boulevard and City Park Avenue.
