In Bayou St. John, a renovated Victorian shotgun asks $449K

The renovation took it from double- to single-family home

A 2015 renovation transformed this Bayou St. John home from a Victorian double shotgun to a modern, open-concept side hall. From the exterior, it’s not obvious that the three-bedroom, two-bathroom abode wasn’t built as a side hall. But a glimpse at the assessor’s website reveals that just a few years ago, the home was a buttery yellow double.

The home has a fresh coat of paint, new light fixtures, and a flower bed where a stoop once stood, but it otherwise looks much the same—at least from the outside. The home’s renovation opened up its floor plan, unifying both sides of the double in the front to create an open living area. There, brick fireplaces are weathered harbingers of the original layout. Everything else—from the subway tiles to the brass chandelier—feels stylish and contemporary. High, 10.5-foot ceilings and hardwood floors create an airy feel.

Beyond the open living area, a side hall hugs a series of three bedrooms. The master has a walk-in closet and a lavish bath with a glass enclosure shower and soaking tub. It opens to a deck and fenced backyard.

Sitting a block off Orleans Avenue, the 2,004-square-foot home asks $449,000.
