6 places to stay during Southern Decadence

View as Map

Southern Decadence is fast approaching, and if you haven’t booked a room yet for New Orleans’ biggest LGBTQ event...well, you should probably get on that. Events include street parties, a walking parade at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 1, and a free outdoor concert at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, August 31 at the intersection of Bourbon and St. Ann streets. But all of Labor Day weekend will be a rainbow-drenched, see-and-be-seen extravaganza.

“The most important thing for attendees to consider is location to all the excitement,” said Mark Wilson, general manager of Bourbon Orleans Hotel (the event’s official hotel sponsor).

Whether you’d like to spend the weekend in the epicenter of the festivities or you’d prefer a little more breathing room, there’s a spot for you. Here are six time-tested places to stay for Southern Decadence.

If you want to stay in the epicenter of Decadence, Bourbon Orleans Hotel is the place to be. There are 25 suites with balconies, an opulent, marble-clad lobby, and a courtyard pool—but rooms sell out fast. “We are currently at 90 percent capacity and we do expect to fully sell out for Southern Decadence this year,” said Wilson. There’s no pool at this hotel, but it’s slightly more affordable than others in the French Quarter, and it’s close to all the events. Don’t forget to stop by The Bombay Club, a swanky, wood-paneled jazz lounge, for a martini.

The Omni Royal Orleans is a six-minute walk from the center of the festivities—but if you don’t feel like going to Decadence, let Decadence come to you when its parade passes by the hotel. The 345-room hotel includes a gym and rooftop pool.

This 64-room hotel feels a bit more modern than its counterparts, thanks to its clean-lined courtyard pool and stylish Vive! Lounge. It’s also a five-minute walk from Oz New Orleans, so it offers “a quieter home base for those that desire a peaceful respite after a long day of celebrations,” Wilson said.

Located in the CBD, Ace Hotel is far from the beaten path—but that could be a good thing, depending on your perspective. Its trendy Three Keys venue offers a slate of Decadence-related programming, including Grrlspot (a pop-up lesbian bar) and an LGBTQ pool party.
