New Orleans is a haunted city 365 days out of the year—but in October, it wears its spooky mantle of fog, Spanish moss, and vermin especially effectively.

With that Halloween spirit in mind, here are some legitimately creepy places around New Orleans. Are they haunted? Who knows. Hair-raising? Definitely. From an abandoned amusement park in New Orleans East to the scene of a murder-suicide in the French Quarter, these sites are all chilling in their own way. They speak to the bloody, violent, and downright disturbing history of New Orleans—and the United States itself.

From haunted to spectacular

As William Faulkner famously wrote, “The past is never dead. It’s not even past.” Nowhere does that feel more true than in his former hometown of New Orleans, where the city’s story is written in its brick-and-beam Creole cottages, bargeboard shotgun homes, and midcentury modern homes by the lakefront. The history of its architecture follows the history of its people, and with this in mind, Curbed New Orleans mapped 10 homes to tour, whether you’re a local or a tourist.

Editor’s Note: This post was originally published in August 2013 and has been updated with the most recent information.

A year and a day...according to local lore, that’s the amount of time that must pass before a body interred in one of New Orleans’ above-ground tombs decomposes, leaving only bones behind. At that point, the tomb—which acts like an oven in the subtropical heat, subjecting the body to a process resembling slow cremation—can be opened.

The process says as much about New Orleans’ relationship with death as it does about its climate and topography. Because the city is below sea level, interring a body six feet under is not a viable option (caskets literally float back up out of the ground). So, New Orleans has developed a unique cemetery culture of above-ground tombs.

In New Orleans, you'll find cemeteries dating back as early as 1789; a triple-x marked tomb believed to house Voodoo queen Marie Laveau; a Hurricane Katrina memorial paying tribute to the unclaimed and unidentified victims of the storm; and a relationship with the spiritual world that’s both haunting and beautiful.

New Orleans may not have fall foliage, and it may not have cool weather, but at least we have pumpkins. Yes, most of the pumpkins at these patches are imported from New Mexico, but that doesn’t make them any less carve-able, or the hay rides any less Instagrammable.

Here are seven pumpkin patches around the New Orleans (spanning from Kenner to the West Bank).

Six years of Michael Jackson “Thriller” tributes

While there are several spooky events happening in New Orleans during Halloween, there is no better “Thriller” than a Halloween-centered flashmob in front of City Hall.

Today, the New Orleans Recreation Department and FITNOLA held their 6th Annual Flashmob at City Hall, led by FITNOLA instructor Kenneth Kynt Bryan. With over one-hundred participants in part of its show, FITNOLA and NORDC recruited many of its student dancers from an array of local schools.

According to Flashmob New Orleans, the choreographed performances all started as tributes to Michael Jackson’s 1983 “Thriller” music video.

At the event, dancers performed to hit songs by Michael Jackson, Missy Elliot, and Taylor Swift. Practice for the student-based “Thriller” choreography started in the middle of this past October.

This Flashmob in particular held a tribute to Fats Domino, featuring an appearance by and sing along with New Orleans jazz singer John Boutté

Halloween, New Orleans style

While New Orleans’s first Weird Homes Tour is weeks away, it doesn’t stop some residents from decorating their home for Halloween—for the fun of it.

Next week, Curbed New Orleans would like to showcase some of the best Halloween decor and displays around the city. If there is a particularly home, building, or street that does Halloween right, we want to know!
